At our 1st Clanfield Cub Pack, we offer a diverse and exciting program for participants of all abilities. All children are welcome to join, whether brand new or coming up from Beavers. Our Cubs program is specifically designed for children aged 8-10.5 years old of any gender to develop skills, create friendships, and have fun in the great outdoors. Our dedicated leaders work tirelessly to ensure that every child in our program is given the opportunity to learn something new, and experience new things in a safe, supportive environment. Please note that waiting list times will vary depending on our current numbers, and we aim to keep numbers at 30 maximum.
Our sessions run from 18:30-20:00 every Thursday during term time.
What we do
Get Outdoors
We love to get our Cubs outside and active. Some of our previous physical activities have included hikes, wide games, water fights, rifle shooting, kayaking, abseiling and rock climbing. We always take our Cubs away on Cub camp or on nights away at least once a year.
Learn new skills
We aim to provide our Cubs with new skills and have previously done knot tying, film making, cooking, campfire building and shelter building.
Make new friends
It’s important for our Cubs to have fun and socialise as well as learn new things. We encourage teamwork and leadership within our sixes and give plenty of opportunity to talk and play games. Cubs work as a team to help other people, and we do our best to get our Cubs to take an active interest in their community.
Earn Badges
Challenge Badges
Challenge Badges are all about stepping outside your comfort zone. Try out something you wouldn’t normally be interested in. Take the lead on something that scares you. There are 7 Challenge Award badges Cubs must complete to achieve their Chief Scout’s Silver Award. These are the Personal Challenge Award badge, Our World Challenge Award badge, Our Outdoors Challenge Award badge, Our Adventure Challenge Award badge, Our Skills Challenge Award badge, Teamwork Challenge Award badge and the Team Leader Challenge Award badge.
Activity Badges
Become an expert in something you love, or try something shiny and new. From athletics and astronomy to photography and environmental conservation, there’s something for every Cub. There are 33 Activity Badges, six are required to achieve the Chief Scout Silver Award.
Staged Badges
Staged Badges are achieved by members of Scouting throughout their Scouting journey. They can start earning them from Beavers onward and all the way through to Explorers. There are 15 Staged Badges that Cubs can earn. From Stage 1 First Aid all the way to Stage 50 Hikes Away.

FAQs
Where can I buy the uniform?
Uniform can be purchased at our local scout shop, second hand or online from the scout website. We require a Cub uniform jumper and polo shirt. A purple and green scarf can be purchased once your new Cub is ready for their investiture. Cubs are also given a woggle in the colour of their six. The trousers/shorts and cap are not required, however we do ask that the Cubs wear practical trousers/shorts and practical shoes to their sessions.
Do I need to buy the badges?
There is no need to buy badges as these are provided by the section as part of our termly budget. We do our best to ensure all Cubs have a chance to complete their Chief Scouts Silver Award by the time they are ready to move onto Scouts and plan our sessions with badges in mind. If sewing is not your forte, then badge glue can be purchased online.
How much does the membership fee cost?
We charge a small fee per term for each Cub. This is currently £40 but can change depending on the programme, however we always strive to keep costs as low as possible. Your fee will go towards our adventure activities, supplies, amenities and badges. Camps will incur an extra cost, which we try to keep as low as possible whilst providing the most fun and adventure.
Can I stay with my child for the session?
Absolutely! Our Scouting Guidelines require 1 adult per 8 Cubs when outside of the Hut. We always need a parent or two to stay and help cover us, especially if we are running a session outside of our usual meeting place. We currently have up to 30 Cubs, which means we need as many parent helpers as we can get.
My child is nervous, what can they expect from the session?
Our Cubs sessions start at 18:30 on a Thursday evening. This is usually in our meeting hall at Hyden Lodge, however any changes to our location will be communicated via email before the session. Our Cubs will talk and play games amongst themselves until the start of the session. We start with our ceremonial ‘Grand Howl’. Then we will proceed with the planned session, this could be anything from archery to cake baking, fire making and filmmaking.
Each Pack is led by our Cub leader who is traditionally nicknamed Akela after the wise leader of the wolf pack in The Jungle Book. Within the Pack, the Cubs are part of a Six. A Six is a smaller group of Cubs led by an older Cub who takes on a peer leadership role as a Sixer and by another Cub who takes on a secondary role as a Seconder. When your child is invested they will be assigned to their Six, and given their coloured woggle. The Six becomes their team for team games and they are tasked with looking after each other. The Sixer is responsible for making sure your new Cub feels welcome in their group.
Once we have finished with our activities we end with the Flag Down ceremony. These ceremonies help provide structure and remind our Cubs of our Scouting values. Parents arrive to pick their Cubs up for the end of session at 20:00.
Where can I find the programme?
We use OSM (Online Scout Manager) which is a platform used to simplify our record keeping (such as keeping track of your child’s badge progress). It also has a parent portal which allows you to communicate with the leaders and stay up to date. Parents can also easily sign up to help each session. Our programme for the term can be found on here, alongside payment details and a sign-up link is provided upon your Cub joining the pack.
