Things to do nearby

The wonderful Queen Elizabeth II Country Park is an hours hike through fields from the Hut (via Chalton Lane) or a short 10min drive up the A3. There are many amenities at the park including:

Fort Purbook is an activity centre owned by Peter Ashley, which is a 20min drive away. It is in an old military fort overlooking Portsmouth, providing an awe-inspiring historical backdrop and can host many adventure activities including:

Butser Hill Ancient Farm is an open-air archaeology museum. Their buildings include a Roman villa, Celtic village, Stone Age farm, and Saxon halls — all reconstructed from real UK archaeology, and open to be explored! Step back in time and get close up with buildings, technologies, and animals from the ancient past. They host all manner of events with re-enactments to festivals, and they can facilitate large group bookings.

There are many excellent hikes around Clanfield Village and the surrounding countryside including:

  • Hikes up Butser Hill – the highest point in Hampshire!
  • Windmill Hill, overlooking Clanfield
  • The Queen Elizabeth II Park Loop
  • Walks from the Red Lion Pub or the famous Bat and Ball Cricket Pub.

Clanfield Observatory

Clanfield is lucky to host The Hampshire Astronomical Group’s Clanfield Observatory , which is reputed to be one of the best equipped amateur observatories in the UK. They are happy to host visits with Scout groups, and will provide a comprehensive guided tour of the Observatory and show the ‘wonders of the night sky’ through their large research-grade telescopes. There is a small fee charged – currently £5 per child, £10 per adult – with a maximum of 32 persons per visit.

We are lucky to be placed in an area with lots of lovely local parks. There are two within 5-10mins walking distance of the hut. Peel Park is on top of the hill with a large play area, skatepark, football field and small basketball court. This park is also a dog-free zone. There is also Clanfield Meadow which hosts the Clanfield Cricket Club and which also features a large play area and a large open space for games.
